This is the place where you can personalize your profile!
But, how?
By moving, adding and personalizing widgets.
You can drag and drop to rearrange.
You can edit widgets to customize them.
The left side has widgets you can add!
Some widgets you can only access when you get a premium membership.
Some widgets have options that are only available when you get a premium membership.
We've split the page into zones!
Certain widgets can only be added to certain zones.
"Why," you ask? Because we want profile pages to have freedom of customization, but also to have some consistency. This way, when anyone visits a deviant, they know they can always find the art in the top left, and personal info in the top right.
Don't forget, restraints can bring out the creativity in you!
Now go forth and astound us all with your devious profiles!
Well, the bit I thought was pushing it, perhaps a little too hard, went something like "I'm a straightedge. Fuck you.".
Now, to me, that comes across as a bit... well, I'd say just plain terrible to be frank. That sort of 'flaming cross' of a motto that the Group can proclaim and advertise, but the individual can't necessarily back up in one-on-one debate, is no good for anything. Should I ever affiliate myself with some kind of 'group' identity such as... oh I don't know, let's say the Aryan Nation for example... and I were to say something like "I'm white, fuck you." predictably enough, you may or may not respond on my page with a comment intended to question the motivations behind adopting this motto - and the group identity/attitude/image/ it represents (like I did). "I'm this, you're not, fuck you." ? I don't think you can really claim with any kind of reasonable clout that this way of thinking is beneficial to anyone. That's the part I was questioning you about - not so much the fact that you're "straightedge" per sey (you likely would have got the same kind of attention from me if you flagrantly advertised your affiliations with the Aryan Nation, The Anti-Racist Action, The Animal Liberation Front, The National Rifle Association, or the Association of Militant Rastafarian Fundamentalist Midget Albinos etc. etc.) but the fact that you seem to think that those who are not 'edge' are somehow lesser. That's basically it.
The thing I was talking about with the cultural movement occuring out of your sphere of direct exposure I suppose would be Minor Threat's influence on the American punk scene who sort of established all of the fundamental principles of the straightedge movement's belief system. With the X's & being "true", & travelling around in packs & beating up smokers at punk shows and stuff... I suppose a kid from Australia can pick up on it remotely through the usual channels (internet, tv, radio etc. etc.) & conveniently fit it into their own lifestyle, as it seems you have (from what I understand of your response basically), but I can't help but think that's a little weird... It's not a big point anyway. I guess you don't have to be from Isreal to be Jewish these days, and so the point is a bit moot.
Whatever man - I think that's great that you've chosen to live "drug-free" or "whole" or however you defined what being straightedge is all about. There's nothing wrong with that - but the thing is, you can do that without sporting the group identity & not using it as a tool to cultivate your personality with. The Straightedge movement, the group itself, is a militant, ignorant mob of moral supremacists who define themselves by their moral superiority & strength in numbers/might making right ways of thinking. I've been to shows & have seen kids get stomped for lighting up a smoke during the Wrong set. Shit like that is ridiculous and wrong regardless of who is doing the stomping and their reasons for doing it. I'm just curious as to why you would bother adopting this group affiliation so enthusiastically (I've looked through your gallery), when you can adopt the ideals, the principals, the rules & apply them to your life WITHOUT all the marketing, the fucking gang-sign type bullshit you're throwing around all over the place, the ridiculous mottos & showy slogans etc. etc.
It just seems inappropriate, unnecessary, and reminiscent of that typical adolescent desire to 'fit-in' with any kind of group, solely for the sake of being in a group (so that you can have mottos, & logos, & symbols & not worry about being as much of an individual).
I guess that's basically what I was asking you about. Perhaps later on, you won't consider yourself a to be a 'straight-edge and whole' person, but rather a 'whole' person with a much more individual set of descriptive qualifiers. Thanks for responding anyway - In all honesty, I'm really only curious about this type of behaviour because I find it fascinating, and I'm just seeing what's out there I guess.
"Straight edge"? The rest of us just call it "Moral Elitism" or how about "Non-Denominational Puritanism". Interestingly enough - historically speaking, pretty well every group of people who've considered themselves morally superior for their set of behaviours & principles have often ultimately come to be thought of as wrong and/or evil for their actions, in retrospect.
But still, that's great though - you've managed to cultivate a group-affiliation-based identity appropriated from a cultural movement that started far beyond your sphere of direct exposure. Way to pick up on the trend, as they say.
I suppose so long as you're able to remain at least somewhat critical of your own views, and it's completely harmless to everyone around you, then it's all fine and good - I imagine that devout dogmatists of any description (such as yourself perhaps) ought to have learned to expect being confronted by reactionary comments like this every now and then.
Think about it anyway. If you're so convinced you're right, you probably won't think it too necessary to argue with me on any of these topics, and we could leave it at that if you wish.
I just hate to see minds going to waste on dogmatic and rigid belief systems of any sort.
If you think about it - things like Dogma, Piety, Faith, and Indoctrination are also Mind-Altering Substances (or concepts rather) because they too serve to alter your behaviours in such a way, just like any 'illicit drug' (the only real difference can be said to be purely physiological). Christians frequently talk about how they get 'High On God' for example - so what's the distinction?
This all might very well sound fairly condescending, but I'm just curious as to your justification for adopting such a prohibitive and limiting lifestlye.
